Yesterday’s announcement that Ben Affleck has been cast as Batman in Zack Snyder’s Man Of Steel sequel has already divided the internet and one ticked off fan has taken matters into his own hands. John Roden from Kentucky has set up a petition to get movie studio Warner Bros to change their recent casting decision.

The petition has been signed by more than 22,000 people in just over a day but Roden is keen to make it clear that he wishes Ben Affleck no ill-will and writes;

“I would like to add that this petition was not meant in any way to harm Ben Affleck or his career. I respect Affleck's work, I just feel he is inappropriate for the role.”

Here’s a brief selection of some of the printable comments people have left on the page so far.

Ben Affleck would ruin the role as Batman. He may be able to pull off Bruce Wayne, but he doesn't have what it takes to be the Dark Knight”

“As an avid Batman fan I am already disappointed that he is being downplayed in a sequel to a Superman film instead of a new stand alone feature. To have THIS guy take on the role is just the icing on a disgusting cake Warner Bros. is cooking up.”

“This is gonna be worse than Daredevil. We need Bale.”

“Just...just no.”

Ben Affleck will destroy the legacy of Batman. Please bring back Christian Bale.”

Truth be told, I was secretly hoping that Josh Brolin would be offered the role and not only has he got the acting range and the physicality for the role, he also has a commanding chin that would have looked mighty heroic fighting alongside Superman. I think it’s fair to say that Affleck’s casting has made a fair few fans nervous about the future of the character and the direction of the Man Of Steel sequel.

Let’s just address the elephant in the room here, Daredevil was terrible and there’s no escaping its creative failings so there’s some justifiable caution. Not many actors get a second chance at playing a superhero, Ryan Reynolds did and that didn’t turn out so well and that Deadpool movie continues to languish in development hell.

 As it’s unlikely that Warner Bros will revoke their decision, how about we give Affleck (or Batffleck as Kevin Smith has dubbed him) a chance before writing him off. Since Daredevil Ben Affleck has emerged as a talented director with Gone Baby Gone, The Town and Argo winning loads of awards as well as making a tidy sum at the box office.

The comparission might not quite be the same but as multiple actors have played the role I’ll justify it that way. Every time a new actor is cast as Doctor Who the internet threatens to buckle under the weight of negativity for the latest incarnation. Then when people see them in the role they love the new guy and wonder what all the fuss was about, naturally not everybody will be happy but that’s just a fact of life.

We’ll keep you updated on all the latest news on the Man Of Steel sequel as soon as we hear something.
