We start off the last month of 2018 with a solid and varied selection starting with Mission: Impossible: Fallout. Two years after capturing criminal mastermind Solomon Lane (Sean Harris), Ethan Hunt (Cruise) and his team now must find a mysterious group called The Apostles who are out to acquire three plutonium cores for a major terrorist attack. And with an assigned babysitter CIA agent joining the team (Henry Cavill) to make sure they don’t screw up, the IMF team has to stop the group before millions of lives are endangered.

For my money, the Mission: Impossible franchise is the best action franchise of all time with some of the best and most consistently stellar action sequences ever. While Ghost Protocol is the peak of the series so far and for me one of the best action movies ever made, the films have still maintained a high standard of quality since in Rogue Nation and now Fallout. The story is more involved this time around continuing off the last film, and the action scenes are absolutely amazing, especially with the fully devoted Cruise risking life and limb for his audience in breathtaking stunts. And the addition of Henry Cavill really upped the ante as well. I hope this series never stops and keeps up this high level of entertainment.

Next up is the newest film in James Wan Conjuring universe, The Nun. Father Burke (Demián Bichir) is a priest sent to investigate strange occurrences for the Vatican. He is sent to Romania with Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) to investigate the apparent suicide of a nun at a cloistered abbey. Together they uncover an unholy history at the ancient abbey and must confront a malevolent force that has been terrorizing the inhabitants there and may pose a threat to the fate of not only their lives but their very souls.

The Conjuring universe has been one of the most successful horror series in film history and with good reason. They are a wonderfully demented world of stories that keeps audiences scared and having fun. This newest installment, The Nun, has been the most successful film to date and is very different from any other film thus far. The period setting and the fact that most of the film takes place in one location makes for a claustrophobic and jump filled thrill ride telling the story of one of the fan favorite ghosts from the Conjuring films. Solid performances by Bichir and Farmiga anchor this retro styled romp and the fun factor is undeniable.

Lastly this week is Operation Finale. Oscar Isaac plays legendary Mossad agent Peter Malkin, who led a team of Israeli secret agents who pursued and captured one of the most notorious Nazi SS Officers of all time, Adolf Eichmann (Ben Kingsley). The story of their exhaustive manhunt that led them to Eichmann living in Buenos Aires, their plan to capture him and bring him to Israel for a historic 8-month trial is brought to life like never before.

Operation Finale is fast paced, exciting and unbelievably amazing true story. Director Chris Weitz manages to keep things interesting, entertaining, fascinating and in parts, somehow funny. Isaac is great in the lead role of Malkin and Kingsley is suitably disturbing as the notorious Eichmann. They are backed up by a solid supporting cast including Mélanie Laurent, Nick Kroll, Great Scacchi, and Peter Strauss and the production design is superb. This one takes its place among the great post-WWII thrillers.

Also of note this week is the insanely fun action comedy Snowflake, the bizarre new comedy The Happytime Murders with Melissa McCarthy and a bunch of inappropriate Muppets, and Westworld: The Complete Second Season.

Until next week movie lovers.
