Welcome to 2021! Only a week or so in and it has already been pretty eventful! The same cannot be said about the releases, I don’t know about you but I am really missing movie theatres right about now. But a few great titles in the mix for January so far starting off with one of my favorite films of 2020, Love and Monsters. Timid Joel Dawson (Dylan O’Brien) has been living in an underground bunker for seven years along with the rest of humanity after an apocalypse turned all cold blooded creatures into giant monsters. But after all his bunker friends pair off into couples, Joel decides to risk going above ground to make the 80 mile trek to another colony to meet up with his high school girlfriend Aimee (Jessica Henwick). Along the way Joel will face certain death at every turn but may learn more about who he really is than he could have ever imagined.

Love and Monsters is everything I love about movies. The cast is excellent across the board from Maze Runners O’Brien to Iron Fists Jessica Henwick and a nice cameo by Michael Rooker. The story is driven by love, O’Brien is lovable and along with the creature designs really exudes a loving 80s vibe. There is drama, hilarity, heart, action, sci fi, amazing creatures and excellent writing, directing and production design. Love and Monsters is a winner and suitable for pretty much any age as well. Seek it out!

Another gem to recommend this week is an older title being re-released with ‘Retro VHS’ packaging, Blind Fury. Rutger Hauer plays Nick Parker, a Vietnam Vet blinded during the war who was found by a local tribe and taught to enhance his remaining senses and expertly wield a sword. Upon his return to the USA, he tries to visit an old friend, Frank Devereaux (Terry O’Quinn) but finds him missing and his wife (Meg Foster) and child in danger. Nick decides to help out the family and stop the crooked casino boss who kidnapped Frank, but finds the odds not in his favor.

Blind Fury was released in 1989 in the prime of 80s action flicks. It definitely has that 80s cheese factor but not dialed up too much, just enough to make it nostalgic without being dumb. Hauer is an excellent lead and the story plays out very well with some nicely staged action scenes, especially near the end when Hauer has to face off with none other than Sho Kosugi, star of multiple 80s ninja movies. The movie is just so fun to watch, mainly due to Hauer’s charisma and director Phillip Noyce who that same year would direct the amazing thriller Dead Calm and go on to direct two Harrison Ford Jack Ryan movies and Angelina Jolie’s Salt. Blind Fury is solid 80s action fun and is a mostly overlooked gem. Check it out.

Also of note this week is the new boxing drama Jungleland with Charlie Hunnam and Jack O’Connell, 12 Hour Shift with the amazing Angela Bettis, and award winning drama Yellow Rose.

Until next week movie lovers, stay safe!
