July continues with another solid week and an eclectic mix of titles. We have some punk rock horror, some POV action madness and a visit back to the 80s. These are your new releases for July 12, 2016.
First up this week is a new horror film from writer director Jeremy Saulnier whose previous effort, Blue Ruin, was a bonafide cult hit. Green Room is the story of a travelling punk band, The Ain’t Rights, who take a job playing a skinhead clubhouse when they are down on their luck and broke. But when the band witnesses a murder on the premises, their quick gig turns into a night long siege as the skinheads and their cunning leader Darcy Banker (Patrick Stewart) stop at nothing to silence them for good.
Green Room is another great siege film, of which there have been many in the past few years. But the setting and the cast of Green Room really set it apart. Patrick Stewart is great playing against type as a ruthless supremacist leader, Anton Yelchin in one of his final roles is excellent as Pat, one of the band members fighting for their lives, and Imogen Poots is equally great as Amber, an Aryan girl whose friend was killed who has joined the band in their struggle. Saulnier crafts an incredibly tense and fast paced thriller that keeps the viewer engaged and also manages to shock occasionally. A great flick highly recommended.
Next up is a unique new film for action fans, Hardcore Henry. Henry (Andrei Dementiev) finds himself waking up not remembering any of his life but discovering from his wife (Haley Bennett) that he has been brought back to life and artificially enhanced. But within minutes of his revelation Henry is on the run and pursued by legions of mercenaries who want him dead. Now he must fight, shoot and hack his way through Moscow to discover his purpose and the truth behind his past.
Aside from being a fully action packed movie, Hardcore Henry is the first full length action movie filmed completely from the first person point of view. This may dissuade some viewers based on the fact that the camera angles are fast, crazy and full of motion but for those who don’t mind it, Hardcore Henry has some of the most intense and inventive action sequences ever. Add in the fact that you get both Tim Roth and Sharlto Copley as supporting players and you have a whole new experience in action that has to be seen to be believed.
Lastly this week is the new film from Richard Linklater, Everybody Wants Some. Picked up where Linklater left off in the 70s with Dazed and Confused, Everybody Wants Some shifts to the 80s to follow a group of friends who play college baseball as they navigate their newfound freedoms and deal with their buddies, girls, drugs and their futures.
Everybody Wants Some definitely does not have the same magic that Linklater infused into Dazed and Confused but is still a funny comedy with good performances all around. While Dazed and Confused felt authentic this one seems more obvious with seemingly forced 80s references popping up throughout the film. It just never really feels like the actual 80s and is more like actors playing dress up. But Linklater still has some great dialogue, a few memorable characters and some good laughs. Worth a visit but just not destined to be a cult classic like Dazed and Confused.
Also of note this week is The Divergent Series: Allegiant continuing the story of the popular franchise, horror icon Debbie Rochon’s directorial debut with Model Hunger and the new horror flick Road Games.
Until next week movie lovers.
