While the summer box offices continues to ramp up the DVD and Blu-ray shelves are steadily getting filled with a nice assortments of goodies as well. A few new releases and more catalog gems for you this week. These are your new releases for July 8, 2014.

First up this week is the indie horror film All Cheerleaders Die. A fun romp in the tradition of 80s horror, the film follows a high school outcast who uses supernatural forces to get cheerleaders to help her take down the captain of the high school football team.

All Cheerleaders Die is a gory, funny, and well made horror guaranteed to keep fans of the genre entertained. Great performances throughout and a slick overall presentation make for an above average entry in the genre, not a surprise seeing as the film is co-written and co-directed by genre fave Lucky McKee.

Next up is the glorious first time Blu-ray release of Walter Hill’s 1981 action classic Southern Comfort. When a squad of National Guards goes out on a training exercise in the swamps of Louisiana, the end up fighting for their lives against hordes of angry Cajuns.

Southern Comfort is often compared to the 1972 film Deliverance but they are actual very different films. Southern Comfort deals more with soldiers who are out of their element and outwitted and really tried to show a reflection of the Vietnam War in its story. The ensemble cast including Powers Booth, Keith Carradine, Fred Ward and Peter Coyote are all excellent here as is Hill’s masterful direction. A very welcome addition to Blu-ray indeed.

Lastly this week is The Raid 2. The sequel to the 2011 smash Indonesian action film, this one finds the cop that survives the events in The Raid going undercover to infiltrate the crime syndicate from the first film to stop them once and for all and protect his family. The Raid 2 offers much of the same from the first film (which isn’t a bad thing at all) with unbelievable action set pieces, kinetic fight choreography and another great performance by Iko Uwais as the hero Rama. Hollywood really should take some notes from these Indonesian filmmakers when it comes to staging action scenes, these have to be seen to be believed. Highly recommended.

Until next week movie lovers.
