Well we not only gained an hour this week, but we are back to a normal looking new release week! And for the superhero fans out there, we get Zack Snyder’s Justice League on Thursday and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier series on Friday! But today we start off with one of the most talked about films of the past year and now a five time Oscar Nominated film, Promising Young Woman. Carey Mulligan stars as Cassandra, a woman in her late 20s having trouble navigating life after a hideous crime involving her best friend changes her outlook. After dropping out of medical school and now living with her parents and working at a coffee shop, Cassie spends her nights trolling local bars and nightclubs pretending to be drunk in hopes of luring in predators that she can serve up justice to. But when Cassie bumps into Ryan (Bo Burnham), a kind and caring old classmate, she starts to rethink her way of life and starts to have hope that there can be something better in her future.

Promising Young Woman is an absolute blast of a thriller. Written by and first time directed by Emerald Fennell, this is one hell of a debut. Fennell’s writing and directing are razor sharp and the film grabs you from the first scene and never lets go. Carey Mulligan gives her best performance to date in my opinion as the multi layered, charismatic and complicated Cassie. There are light moments in the film, tender character moments, and some horrendous and shocking moments, but somehow Fennell and Mulligan pull it off as a perfectly balanced act and create what I think is a near perfect crime thriller. Promising Young Woman is very deserving of the critical praise and award nominations and should be at the top of your list to check out immediately.

Next up is a totally bizarre fun house of a movie, PG: Psycho Goreman. Siblings Mimi (Nita-Josee Hanna) and Luke (Owen Myre) find themselves in a unique situation when a strange game they made up ends in Luke digging a huge hole and unwittingly resurrecting an ancient alien overlord. But when Mimi picks up a magical amulet that accompanied the powerful creature she finds it must obey her every order and whim as long as she possesses it. While it proves fun at first to have an alien overlord at your service, it soon attracts a rogues gallery of intergalactic assassins to Mimi and Luke’s small town neighborhood. Now they must find a way to help their alien to stop all his enemies and save their town…and maybe the world…from intergalactic domination.

PG: Psycho Goreman is written and directed by Canada’s own Steve Kostanski, well known now for his cult hits Manborg, Father’s Day and The Void. And PG: Psycho Goreman might be his biggest cult hit to date. The story is a nostalgic throwback to fantasy sci fi films of the 80s with Kostanski’s signature wit and style. The performances are solid, especially from scene-chewing Hanna, and the makeup and costumes are properly retro and fun. PG: Psycho Goreman is not going to win any big awards, but it is a super fun throwback action sci fi flick with some great laughs, and you can’t really ask for more than that right now.

Also of note this week is the creepfest British crime drama Des starring David Tennant as real life serial killer Dennis Nilsen and the fun new werewolf flick I Am Lisa.

Until next week movie lovers, stay safe!
