As we wallow in one of the rainiest spring’s in many years, at least we have a nice selection of releases this week to keep us busy. We start off with Fighting with my Family. Based on a true story, Fighting with my Family follows Saraya (Florence Pugh) and her brother Zak (Jack Lowden) teach wrestling classes to kids at their family's wrestling gym and also perform as part of an amateur wrestling league run by their father Patrick (Nick Frost) and their mother Julia (Lena Headey). When both of them are selected to try out for the WWE, their dreams take different paths as Saraya gets selected but Zak is not. As Saraya, now going by the name of Paige, navigates the viciously competitive world of professional wrestling while Zak copes with his disappointment and depression.

Fighting with my Family is based on the true story of pro wrestler Paige and is a fun, authentic, funny and inspiring story that will please all ages. There are lots of great inspiring moments to teach the kids some valuable lessons, but adult wrestling fans and even non-fans won’t be able to resist the charm of the story and the excellent cast including Dwayne Johnson portraying himself and actually producing as well. Very highly recommended.

Next up is the sequel to the surprise 2017 hit Happy Death Day, aptly titled Happy Death Day 2U. Jessica Rothe reprises her role as Tree Gelbman, who finds herself once again having to live her birthday over and over again but this time it is her boyfriend Carter’s (Israel Broussard) roommate Ryan (Phi Vu) who claims he is experiencing the repeating day. So together they must figure out why the day is repeating again and how they can possibly stop it and get back to their original lives.

Happy Death Day was a well-deserved hit with fantastic performances, hilarious situations, really fun horror elements and brilliant sci fi themes. Surprisingly Happy Death Day 2U holds up just as well as the original with even more twists and turns, some great death set ups and tons of laughs, maybe even more this time around. A few scenes go a little far into the silliness but it never takes away from the fun.

Lastly this week is a new martial arts epic, Triple Threat. When Xian, a Chinese billionaire’s daughter (Celina Jade) uses her influence to take down a crime syndicate, the criminals won’t go down without a fight and dispatch a team of assassins to take her out. But when fate intervenes and three men (Tony Jaa, Tiger Chen and Iko Uwais) are forced to work together to save Xian and get vengeance on the syndicate that has affected all of their lives.

Triple Threat is kind of a martial arts version of The Expendables if you will. In addition to Jaa, Chen and Uwais the film also features Scott Adkins, Michael Jai White and Jeejee Yanin and the action, especially in the last third of the movie is just incredible. Watching these masters fight each other with some unbelievable choreography is quite a treat and does not disappoint. If martial arts is your thing you really can’t go wrong with Triple Threat.

Also of note this week is the new Liam Neeson action-fest Cold Pursuit, the documentary Apollo 11 and the Blu-ray debut of the classic thriller The Eyes of Laura Mars.

Until next week movie lovers!
