Lordy this year is flying by! A decent week with a good mish mash of releases for you including the first Marvel Netflix show to hit home video, a great new AMC series you may have missed and a cult classic making its Blu-ray debut. These are your new releases for November 8, 2016.

First up this week is the first season of the first show in Marvel’s partnership with Netflix, Daredevil. Matt Murdoch (Charlie Cox) is a lawyer who was blinded as a child by a chemical spill. With his sight gone he gained new extrasensory powers that enable him to protect the city he loves by night as the masked hero Daredevil. His biggest obstacle in and out of the courtroom is Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio), also known as The Kingpin. With Fisk’s tight grip on all criminal activity in Hell’s Kitchen, Murdoch has his work cut out for him as he single handedly tries to clean up the streets and put an end to Fisk’s rule.

Daredevil is such an impressive start to Netflix’s Marvel Universe. Since its debut we have also seen a season of Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and a second season of Daredevil, but this first season set the tone for all of it bringing us a comic book world that is still grounded in reality. Spectacular fight choreography, beautifully shot, stellar writing and a phenomenal cast all added up to make Daredevil a huge hit. Charlie Cox perfectly imbues both Murdoch and Daredevil and brings one of Marvel’s greatest heroes to life.

Next up is a new show from AMC, the network that brought us The Walking Dead. Into the Badlands is set in a world ruled by feudal lords who occupy different regions of a vast wasteland. Sunny (Daniel Wu) is an enforcer for one of the feudal lords, Quinn (Martin Csokas). Sunny rescues a young man named M.K. (Aramis Knight) and takes him under his wing, but M.K. may be more than just another wayward boy and may hold the key to their entire world being turned upside down.

Into the Badlands is a thoroughly entertaining action fantasy series that builds a world unlike any we have previously seen, fills it with fleshed out interesting characters and treats us to some of the best martial arts fight choreography ever seen on TV. Daniel Wu and Martin Csokas steal every scene they are in as main hero and villain. Wu in particular is a fantastic throwback hero to the days of strong silent types who carry big sticks. Into the Badlands is well worth checking out, it is much more than just another action show.

Lastly this week is a great film with a huge cult following from one of the most inventive directors in the horror genre, Don Coscarelli. Bubba Ho-Tep is the story of Elvis Presley (Bruce Campbell), now living in an East Texas rest home after switching identities with an impersonator years ago and never switching back. He teams up with Jack (Ossie Davis), an elderly black man who believes he is actually John F. Kennedy, to battle an evil Egyptian demon who has chosen the old age home as his new hunting ground. Together they must save not only their home but perhaps the world.

I am not sure how you couldn’t possibly not want to see a movie with a synopsis like that. Coscarelli is a director who likes to take on challenging movies that should rightfully require 10 times the budget he usually has to work with. And somehow he always makes them work. Bubba Ho-Tep is no exception. The legendary Bruce Campbell is perfectly cast as the King of Rock n’ Roll, milking the part for everything its worth. And the equally legendary Ossie Davis holds his own as Jack with excellent chemistry between the two. Add in an Egyptian demon, crazy practical special effects and a ton of laughs and you get a movie that is genuinely infectious, hilarious, endearing and ridiculous. Bubba Ho-Tep has to be seen to be believed.

Also of note this week is the R rated animated flick Sausage Party with Seth Rogen and Kristen Wiig, the Kevin Spacey-turned-into-a-cat movie Nine Lives and the excellent documentary on revival cinema, Out of Print.

Until next week movie lovers.
