Although not a huge week this week, it seems fitting that on October 13 Shout Factory has released the long awaited and definitive Blu-ray box set of the Friday the 13th franchise. The story of Jason Vorhees is legend in the horror genre. Little Jason drowned at Camp Crystal Lake while teen camp counsellors were fooling around and years later Jason’s mother returned to the camp to seek vengeance on anyone in her way as the camp attempts to reopen. The story continues through ten sequels and a remake as the grown up Jason takes up his mother’s mission to rid Camp Crystal Lake of all teenagers whether it be slaughtering them at the camp, slaughtering those who dare live near the camp, following teens to New York City or even being resurrected in space. Jason Vorhees will never die and this expansive box set will serve as his legacy.
The Friday the 13th Collection Deluxe Edition box set includes all the films in the franchise, Friday the 13th, Friday the 13th Part 2, Friday the 13th Part 3 in 3D, Friday the 13th The Final Chapter, Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday, Jason X, Freddy Vs. Jason and the 2009 remake (which was actually really great), Friday the 13th. Many of the films feature brand new 4K scans from original negatives, new audio tracks and more special features than you can shake a machete at. There are special features on every films disc, plus two entire extra discs of features, tons of which are newly produced. And it all comes packaged in a beautiful slipcase with each film featuring its original poster art on the cover. For horror fans, the Friday the 13th Collection Deluxe Edition may be the one essential purchase of the year.
Why not keep the theme going with one more horror title, also from Shout Factory, Terror in the Aisles. This documentary of sorts, released in 1984, is a beautifully put together ‘greatest hits’ of the horror genre thus far that year, but presented with an original concept having two horror icons, Donald Pleasance and Nancy Allen, in a movie theatre watching the clips and commenting on the films. The blood-curdling journey through a collection of horror classics like Psycho, Jaws, Poltergeist, Alien, The Bride Of Frankenstein, The Exorcist, Halloween, and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is so much fun to watch and doesn’t have the usual dryness of a documentary but instead feels like hanging out and talking about your favorite movies with friends. All the clips are masterfully edited together with the theatre footage making for the best horror compilation film ever made in my humble opinion.
This new Blu-ray edition of Terror in the Aisles features three brand new interviews, one with Nancy Allen, one with composer John Beal and one with editor Greg McClatchy and they are all entertaining and insightful. There is also a brand new audio commentary with Pop Culture Historian Russell Dyball as well as the entire television cut of the film featuring alternate footage and featured films. Terror in the Aisles is a beautifully put together love letter to horror films. Very highly recommended.
Also of note this week is the new action film The Doorman with Ruby Rose and Jean Reno, the 4K debut of Neill Blomkamp’s sci fi milestone District 9, and the Blu-ray debut of the Oscar Nominated Reversal of Fortune with Jeremy Irons.
Until next week movie lovers, stay safe!
