As ratings giant How I Met Your Mother continues its farewell season, CBS are toying with the idea of a spin-off series focused on a new group of friends.
The potential series is currently being referred to as How I Met Your Father but as the show will centre on new characters it is unlikely to tell the story of how she met Ted Mosby. Events will still take place in New York and the gangs favourite hangout MacLaren’s Pub could be featured. This might be a somewhat vague link between the two shows but it is very early days in development and the spin-off hasn’t been given the greenlight just yet.
HIMYM creators and executive producers Carter Bays & Craig Thomas along with producer Emily Spivey (Up All Night) will put the new show together. A female spin on the format would offer something different but the creators will need to do a little more than rehash to core concept.
Given the fact that HIMYM is the second highest rated sitcom on CBS it makes sense that the network are keen to keep the brand going. After almost nine years HIMYM has remained a success and more importantly it has remained funny, this is in no small part due to the great cast including Jason Segel, Neil Patrick Harris and Alyson Hannigan. Early word has it that the new set of characters will be introduced in the final run of episodes to connect the two groups of friends.
