The BBC have released the title for Matt Smith’s swan-song episodes, The Time Of The Doctor will be broadcast on Christmas Day and will feature the first scene of Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth regeneration. The BBC unveiled the title in a statement which also contained the first official synopsis of the episode;

“Orbiting a quiet backwater planet, the massed forces of the universe’s deadliest species gather, drawn to a mysterious message that echoes out to the stars. And amongst them – the Doctor. Rescuing Clara from a family Christmas dinner, the Time Lord and his best friend must learn what this enigmatic signal means for his own fate and that of the universe.”

Following the record breaking transmission of the 50 anniversary special, The Day Of The Doctor, a brief teaser for the festive episode was shown which featured The Doctor on Trenzalore facing a collection of his old enemies including The Cybermen, The Silence and the return of those time-zapping Weeping Angels. As if that wasn’t enough Doctor Who goodness there’s also a teasing publicity image from The Time Of The Doctor, Matt Smith clutches the severed head of a Cyberman (with a look akin to that of a child who has broken his new toy) whilst Jenna Coleman looks on holding a Christmas cracker.

A full trailer will be broadcast in the run up to Christmas and as we’re on the subject of Steven Moffat TV shows, the highly anticipated third series of Sherlock also debuted a longer trailer and is expected to return to BBC One early January.
