Production on the first block of filming for the eighth series of Doctor Who begun in its usual home of Cardiff on January 6. New Who on the block Peter Capaldi makes his full debut after being glimpsed in the anniversary special and his brief post regeneration scene in The Time of the Doctor.
The BBC have marked the occasion by releasing the first official picture from the set, Capaldi and Jenna Coleman feature in the picture which has the new Doctor still wearing Matt Smith’s outfit so we’ll have to wait little while longer before we get to see what the Twelfth (or Fourteenth) Doctor’s choice of fashion will be to run around space and time in. Just before the start of filming Capaldi told the BBC:
“New job, first day, slightly nervous. Just like the Doctor, I'm emerging from the TARDIS into a whole other world.”
Showrunner Steven Moffat added:
“First the eyebrows! Then, at Christmas, the face! Coming soon, the whole Doctor. In the Cardiff studios, the Capaldi era begins.”
Sightseers and Kill List director Ben Wheatley helms the first two episodes which will see the return of the Paternoster Gang otherwise known as Madame Vastra, Jenny Flint, and Strax. There’s still no confirmation yet as to how many episodes the new series will comprise of, we know that at least 13 episodes will be made and broadcast in one go (for the first time since series 5) but it’s not known if that includes the Christmas special.
We’ll keep you up to date with all the latest developments over the next few months, Doctor Who will return to our screens sometime in the autumn but due to the success of the mini-episodes throughout the anniversary celebrations we’ll likely see a little something before then.
