Starz adaptation of American Gods was dealt a significant blow last November when showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green departed the hit series. Two months on from that announcement and the show has lost one of its stars as Gillian Anderson won't be back to reprise her role as the Goddess Media.

During an interview with The LA Times, Anderson cited the exit of Fuller and Green as the sole reason for her leaving the show. Anderson isn't the only cast member to rethink their position on the series as Kristin Chenoweth (who plays Goddess Easter) has revealed she's now uncertain of her future on American Gods.

“When Bryan was the showrunner, I was coming back for several episodes, but I don’t know now. It depends on who it is and if they think I add value or not.”

In the time since Fuller and Green left the project, Starz has yet to name a replacement showrunner, and the delay will certainly have a knock-on effect with when season two arrives. Meanwhile, Gillian Anderson is back on our screens as Agent Dana Scully in a brand new event series of The X-Files. The eleventh run of the landmark sci-fi series will be broadcast in the UK on Channel 5, but fans should savour these ten episodes as Anderson recently confirmed it would be her last.

"I've said from the beginning; this is it for me, I was a bit surprised by people's [shocked] reaction to my announcement… because my understanding was that this was a single season."

X-Files creator Chris Carter is keen to continue the series beyond the new season, but is a Dana Scully free X-Files something that the fans would watch? David Duchovny left the show after seven seasons and returned as a guest star for the remainder of the original run. Arguably, The X-Files was already past its prime by the time Duchovny bowed out as a regular, but Anderson carried those last two seasons. The addition of Agents Miller and Einstein in season ten were a thinly veiled attempt to introduce a new Mulder and Scully. Both Robbie Amell (Miller) and Lauren Ambrose (Einstein) are back for the new season, so we'll have to wait and see if they inherit the famed basement office.
