The search for a director on Harry Potter spin-off, Fantastic Beats and Where To Find Them, might be at an end with Potter veteran David Yates in talks with Warner Bros to take on the challenge.
David Yates directed films the last four Harry Potter films and is currently working on a new version of Tarzan (also for Warner Bros.) with Alexander Skarsgård in the legendary loincloth. According to Variety, the studio were keen to bring back one of the directors from the Potter franchise, previously Alfonso Cuaron (Prisoner of Azkaban) had been rumoured to be inline but the filmmaker swiftly shot those rumours down as bogus.
J.K Rowling is writing the script and this will also mark her debut as a screenwriter, the story is set within the same magical world as Potter although the events of Fantastic Beasts take place in 1920s New York (70 years before young Harry went off to Hogwarts). Our new protagonist is magizoologist Newt Scamander, author of Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them a book that charts all the different weird and wonderful magical creature he encountered throughout his travels. The book was required reading for all Hogwarts students in the Potter films, now we’ll get to see the adventure behind the book.
David Yates certainly did a sterling job on bringing the epic scope of the books to the screen his familiarity with the material makes him ideally experienced to carve out a new chapter in the Potterverse. Warner Bros. recently announced their plans for a trilogy of Fantastic Beasts films, it’s not yet known if Yates will be signing up to direct all three films and so far no casting decisions have been made.
Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them is due for release on November 18, 2016.
