Hugh Jackman has confirmed that Wolverine 3 will mark his final appearance in the role that launched his career.

"This will be my last one. It just felt like it was the right time to do it. And let’s be honest, 17 years! I never thought in a million years it would last, so I’m so grateful to the fans for the opportunity of playing it. I kind of have in my head what we’re going to do in this last one. It just feels like this is the perfect way to go out.”

Jackman’s appearance in the currently shooting X-Men: Apocalypse has yet to be confirmed, now that it is official he will be retiring from the role surely a cameo is on the cards. Recent rumours have suggested that 20th Century Fox are looking to close the door on the original X-Men franchise. Apocalypse will bring the prequel trilogy to an end and the contracts of the core cast have run their course. Jennifer Lawrence has already made it clear that she won’t be coming back for more; a flat-out X-Men reboot could be the way Fox are going. There’s no way that Fox are going to let one of their most lucrative franchises lay dormant for too long, so we can expect a new actor as Wolverine at some point.

The as yet untitled third Wolverine solo movie is due for release in 2017 before that Deadpool takes aim at cinemas this coming February and X-Men: Apocalypse arrives on May 27.
