Easily one of the most memorable (and surprisingly successful) movies of 2018 was without question John Krasinski's effective thriller A Quiet Place. The monstrous box office meant that a sequel was an inevitability, and earlier this year Krasinski confirmed that he would be working on the sequel. Details on the follow-up have been under wraps, but during a recent interview, Krasinski revealed that the next installment wouldn't be in the traditional mold of a sequel.
“The idea for it is pretty simple. I’m writing now—I don’t have it fleshed out—but the thought that occurred to me, that really excited me about it, was that most sequels are about the return of a hero or a villain. You take this character that people loved once and you bring them back, and you have to create a new world around them. We have the exact opposite setup. We have the world, and you can drop whoever you want into that world and everyone feels connected to it. The reason I decided to go back, in the end, was this world is so rich, and it’s so much fun to explore. There are so many different things to see now. Everyone else in the world is experiencing this, so I’m curious to see what that looks like from another perspective.”
From the sounds of it, the sequel could introduce an entirely fresh cast in a new setting perhaps years after the events of the first film. That said, it could be anything at this stage as we know so little about what Krasinski is putting together for the sequel. The ending of the first film had the surviving members of the Abbott family readying themselves for a full-scale attack from a horde of creatures. The newly discovered weakness of these seemingly unstoppable invaders gave them a fighting chance, but the outcome of that encounter remains unknown. I am a big fan of A Quiet Place, and while I really want to know what happened in the basement, I love the idea of a more anthology approach. Emily Blunt could always show up in a cameo or set up a third film
Krasinski has previously stated he is unsure if he'll direct the sequel, but with that May 15, 2020 release date edging ever closer, I am sure we'll find out soon enough.
