Linda Hamilton will reprise her iconic role as Sarah Connor in the as yet untitled Terminator sequel from producer James Cameron. The T2 director broke the news earlier today at a private event and spoke passionately about Hamilton's return to the franchise.

"As meaningful as she was to gender and action stars everywhere back then, it's going to make a huge statement to have that seasoned warrior that she's become return. There are 50-year-old, 60-year-old guys out there killing bad guys, but there isn't an example of that for women."

Cameron makes a damn fine point that action roles for older male actors are in abundance, but few and far between for older women. If the likes of Arnie, Stallone, Liam Neeson, Tom Cruise and Keanu Reeves can lead action movies in the 50s and beyond, it's high time that we get a female equivalent. And there's nobody better to school the youngsters than Linda Hamilton.

Full disclosure, after Terminator Genisys I didn't think there was anywhere left for this franchise to go, it might have been a minor improvement on Rise of the Machines, but that's not saying much. However, when Cameron announced that he was planning a new film and Deadpool's Tim Miller would direct it, and all of a sudden I'm interested. Add to that the reunion of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton, and I'm actively excited albeit a tad sceptical,

James Cameron is planning a new trilogy of Terminator films to wrap up the story, but there's going to be some serious retconning needed to resurrect Sarah Connor. Hamilton declined to reprise the role for Rise of the Machines, and Connor was killed off-screen succumbing to illness. Presumably, Cameron is going to ignore the events of most of the franchise aside from the first two movies and the story will pick up nearly 30 years after T2.

Linda Hamilton isn't the only legendary actress returning to an iconic role after a lengthy gap, Jamie Lee Curtis recently confirmed she would do battle with Michael Myers one final time in the new Halloween sequel/reboot. More on the new Terminator sequel as it comes in.
