The long-mooted Carol and Daryl led spin-off from The Walking Dead just lost one of its leads as Melissa McBride has departed the series. Few details have been revealed, but Deadline's article reveals that production is moving away from its long-term home in Georgia to somewhere in Europe, hinting at a very different type of series. Sadly, it was the relocation that caused McBride to exit the series, which will now leave fans wondering if Carol will make it to the end of the final season. Thankfully, a statement from AMC tells us that McBride will be welcome back into The Walking Dead family in the future.
"Melissa McBride has given life to one of the most interesting, real, human and popular characters in The Walking Dead Universe. Unfortunately, she is no longer able to participate in the previously announced spin-off focused on the Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier characters, which will be set and filmed in Europe this summer and premiere next year. Relocating to Europe became logistically untenable for Melissa at this time. We know fans will be disappointed by this news, but The Walking Dead Universe continues to grow and expand in interesting ways and we very much hope to see Carol again in the near future."
While it is reassuring that we might see Carol again after season 11 concludes, we already know that previously deceased characters will be seen again in standalone stories in the new series, Tales of The Walking Dead. McBride has been on the show since the first season, and her character's journey from victim to hero has taken her to some very dark places over the years, and I genuinely hope we see her again. Meanwhile, it remains unclear how McBride's exit from the as-yet-untitled spin-off will alter the series, but (at the time of writing) production is still due to start this summer.
The Walking Dead The Final Season continues on AMC; UK fans can watch new episodes weekly on Star via Disney+.
