Since the arrival of Daredevil two years ago, the Netflix corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been leading towards its own Avengers styled team-up with The Defenders. Uniting Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist, the highly anticipated event series has now set an August 18 release date.
In a nifty marketing move, the announcement wasn't made with the usual statement from Netflix accompanied by a full trailer. Instead, the news was broken with a short sixteen-second video that featured the four main cast members getting into an elevator. However, you had to play detective to find the release date as the video has an IP address discreetly in the left-hand corner which takes you to The New York Bulletin. As you know, The Bulletin is the newspaper that Daredevil's Karen Paige winds up working at, and the release date was revealed at the bottom of the home page. Very nifty indeed.
The four heroes cross paths in an attempt to bring down the supervillain organisation that has touched all of their lives, The Hand. We already know that Sigourney Weaver's character will be the main antagonist, but it remains unknown who the legendary actress is playing.
In previous years, Netflix has debuted new Marvel shows in the Spring and Autumn, but this year will see a third Marvel series added to the lineup. Following his acclaimed appearance in the second season of Daredevil, Jon Bernthal's Punisher is getting a spin-off, and while no official date has been given, an educated guess would be that Frank Castle will return sometime towards the end of the year.
Starring Charlie Cox, Krysten Ritter, Mike Colter, Finn Jones with Deborah Ann Woll, Rosario Dawson, Carrie-Anne Moss and Scott Glenn. All eight episodes of The Defenders will arrive on Netflix on August 18.
