Paramount has set a new release date for its delayed G.I Joe spin-off Snake Eyes. Initially due for release back in March, Snake Eyes was pulled from the schedule with dozens of movies due to the pandemic and pushed its release until October. Sadly, that's no longer the case as Snake Eyes is now slated to hit cinemas on October 22, 2021.
Tentatively titled G.I Joe Origins: Snake Eyes (that didn't work so well for Wolverine), RIPD director Robert Schwentke helms the prequel that explores the origins of stealthy assassin Snake Eyes. Crazy Rich Asians star Henry Golding plays the titular assassin alongside Andrew Koji, Iko Uwais, Úrsula Corberó, and Samara Weaving. I think it's fair to say that we can expect a trailer in the foreseeable future.
The G.I Joe franchise is something of a slow starter, launching back in 2009 with Rise of Cobra, a plucky cast led by Channing Tatum managed a modest box office haul of $302 million. A production budget of more than $170 million made a strong case that the Rise of Cobra could have been the fall of the franchise. Cut to 2012, and the belated sequel, Retaliation, was mere weeks away from release before Paramount made the bizarre decision to push the launch by a whole year to convert the movie into 3D. The marketing campaign was already in full swing with an expensive Super Bowel trailer giving audiences a taste of what to expect.
Aside from Tatum, Retaliation was a soft reboot with new characters like Dwayne Johnson's Roadblock taking centre stage. However, the 3D did little improve the box office with Retaliation generating $375 million worldwide. Since then we've heard of more reboots and the possibility of a Transformers/G.I Joe crossover. For now, all we know for sure is that Snake Eyes will arrive October 22, 2021.
