Fresh from helping to save the universe in Avengers Endgame, Paul Rudd has signed up to appear in Jason Reitman's top secret Ghostbusters sequel. Before we get too carried away with the prospect of seeing Rudd strap-on a Proton Pack and bust some ghosts, he has been confirmed as having a supporting role playing a teacher.
Currently going under the working title of Ghostbusters 2020, the new film will ignore the events of Paul Feig's reboot as it's directly tied to the original two movies. Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts recently revealed that they would be reprising their roles in some capacity in the new sequel. Naturally, the passing of Harold Ramis means the full original line-up will be missing one Ghostbuster, but I'm sure that will be addressed in the film.
Ghostbusters co-creator and star Dan Aykroyd recently commented that the sequel will connect to the original "in a way that hasn't been done before".
"Jason [Reitman] came up with this idea, which is just so good, everybody got it right away and understood. It will connect, better than anything, to the first movie. That's about all I can say about it, but the two movies will connect, in a way that hasn't been done before."
As to what that way might be, well, we would need to don the cap of speculation. Back in June at the Ghostbusters Fan Fest, Jason Reitman showcased some previously never before seen deleted scenes from Ghostbusters. During the panel (which you can watch in full here), five deleted scenes were shown with Reitman offering a tantalizing tease that there were big plans for the footage.
“In making this movie, we found something kind of extraordinary. We went to Sony, and we said, ‘We’d really love to get back into the original dailies from 1984. Do you still have them?’ And we found them. They were in a mine in Kansas, and we shipped the boxes to Burbank. And we’ve been going through the footage for reasons I cannot tell you, but along the way, we found some really cool stuff.”
Flashbacks? Endgame style time-travel? At this stage, all things are possible, but one question remains unanswered. Can Rick Moranis be tempted back to reprise his role as Louis Tully? We can only hope. Ghostbusters 2020 will be led by Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, and Carrie Coon with more casting announcements to come as production starts in a couple of weeks.
Ghostbusters 2020 is due for release on July 10, (you guessed it) 2020.
