If the idea of a Saw reboot created by and starring Chris Rock wasn't enough to get you interested in the franchise again, Samuel L. Jackson has joined the cast and is set to play Rock's father. In case you were unaware, earlier this year Chris Rock pitched a "reimagining" of Saw to Lionsgate, and they loved his idea they put the movie on the fast track. Plot details are being kept under wraps, all we know for sure is that Rock “will play a police detective investigating a series of grisly crimes”.
Here's what Lionsgate Chairman Joe Drake had to say at the time;
"When Chris Rock came to us and described in chilling detail his fantastic vision that reimagines and spins-off the world of the notorious Jigsaw Killer, we were all-in. Saw is one of the highest grossing horror franchises of all-time and it’s one of Lionsgate’s most successful film series. This upcoming film will still be as mind-bending and intense as all the previous Saw films. Chris conceived this idea, and it will be completely reverential to the legacy of the material while reinvigorating the brand with his wit, creative vision and passion for this classic horror franchise.”
The key word here is "reimagines" which hopefully means the majority of the uneven sequels will be ignored. Everything after the third movie only served to muddle the timeline of events, even the recent attempt to revive the franchise with Jigsaw only complicated things further. While Chris Rock may seem like an unlikely candidate to revive a horror franchise, fellow comedians John Krasinski (A Quiet Place), Jordan Peele (Us, Get Out), and Charlie Brooker (Black Mirror) have made a successful jump to horror.
Having helmed three Saw sequels in the past (parts two, three, and four), Darren Lynn Bousman will return to direct the new movie that is set for release October 23, 2020.
