The BBC have released the first official photo from Sherlock’s forthcoming third season, a pensive Sherlock Holmes haunts an equally contemplative John Watson.

Both Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman return to their roles and after almost two years of waiting we’ll finally find out how the great detective staged his own death. Once again the new series will comprise of three feature length episodes, co-creator and guest star Mark Gatiss has the difficult task of handling the first case The Empty Hearse, Stephen Thompson pens the second episode The Sign of Three and Steven Moffat has the pleasure of bringing the third run to a close with His Last Vow. Likely in his usual cliffhanger fashion that we’ve all come to love despite the frustratingly long wait between each series.

Steven Moffat teased that the wait is almost over and fans will definitely find out how Sherlock fooled his closest friend; "It's been a long time since Sherlock Holmes jumped off that roof - it's time to reveal the truth about what happened between him and the pavement."

There is still no fixed broadcast date for Sherlock but odds are it will be early next year, the  gap between each series might bother some fans but I’d rather wait and they took their time to get it right than it was rushed to meet demand. Kudos to the beeb for letting Moffat and Gatiss have the time they need, both Cumberbatch and Freeman are in high demand so the reality of one series every couple of years is pretty good going.
