Netflix's forthcoming The Defenders unites Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) in one unmissable mini-series. The highly anticipated team-up will be with us sometime next year, and during the Iron Fist panel at the New York Comic-Con, Sigourney Weaver stepped out onto the stage and confirmed she's playing The Defenders' big bad.

Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb was light on details about The Defenders, but he was full of admiration for three-time Academy Award nominee Sigourney Weaver.

“Marvel is honored to have an actress of her caliber and status join what is already our biggest show ever. She is by definition a class act.”

There are no official details regarding who Weaver might be starring as, but it is believed her character is heavily linked to the murderous coven of ninjas known as The Hand. The ancient evil order was introduced in Daredevil and will play an intricate role in next year's Iron Fist. Rosario Dawson's Claire Temple will also feature in Iron Fist following her guest appearances in Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and a fully fledged supporting role in Luke Cage.

The Netflix arm of the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to grow, and earlier this year they added The Punisher to their roster of superheroes. After three bumbled attempts to bring the character to the big screen, Jon Bernthal made quite the impression as Frank Castle (aka The Punisher) during Daredevil's second season. Netflix executives were obviously impressed as they fast-tracked The Punisher series which is now filming.

Currently, Netflix releases two Marvel projects a year with one in March and one in September, but that will likely change as the streaming service has five active Marvel shows in addition to The Defenders. Hopefully we can expect some firm details to emerge from Comic-Con as to when Daredevil and Jessica Jones are returning.

Signorney Weaver can be seen next starring alongside Felicity Jones, Toby Keeble, and a motion-captured Liam Neeson in the emotionally charged A Monster Calls.
