Earlier this month when Trekkies descended to Las Vegas to see the Star Trek 2013 'One Trek Mind Live' panel, they got the chance to vote for their favourite movie in the 12 film franchise. Surprisingly JJ Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness was voted the worst Star Trek and the 1999 parody Galaxy Quest was also in the mix, the first sequel Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan claimed the top spot.
In an interview with The Huffington Post promoting his new film The World's End, Simon Pegg spoke openly about his frustrations with the reaction from the hardcore fans.
"It's asinine, you know? It's ridiculous. And frustrating, as well, because a lot of hard work and love went into that movie, and all JJ wanted to do was make a film that people really enjoyed. So, to be subject to that level of sort of, like, crass f**king ire, I just say, 'F**k you'."
Pegg went on to discuss why he felt the fans reacted this way; “I think they haven't had time to live with it. They haven't had time to review it.”, what is difficult to understand is just how The Final Frontier and Next Generation’s Insurrection scored higher than Into Darkness by an audience of hardcore Star Trek fans. Although success isn’t an instant shortcut to knowing what’s good, it’s worth noting that Star Trek Into Darkness is the highest grossing of all the Star Trek movies as well as being very entertaining.
Star Trek 3 is currently in development but it’s not yet known if JJ Abrams will be returning to direct as he’s working on some indie flick called Star War Episode VII. Karl Urban who plays the trusty Doctor ‘Bones’ McCoy wants more originality from the next chapter in the franchise, in an interview with IGN he expressed how “I really think that what we should do from here, in my personal opinion, is strive to be original. Strive to be something different and new.”
