The season 3 finale of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods left fans desperate for answers, but we may never get a conclusion to Gaiman's epic story of a war between the old and new gods as Starz has brought the series to an end. In a reasonably generic statement from a Starz spokesperson, no specifics for the cancellation were given.

“Everyone at Starz is grateful to the dedicated cast and crew and our partners at Fremantle who brought author and executive producer Neil Gaiman’s ever-relevant story to life that speaks to the cultural climate of our country."

The show had endured a fair share of problems behind the scenes, with originally showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green leaving the series during pre-production on season 2. Several cast members, including Gillian Anderson, Orlando Jones, and Pablo Schreiber, left their respective roles throughout the three seasons. On the plus side, we may yet conclude the story as Neil Gaiman revealed that the producers of American Gods are trying to find the show a new home with a possible movie or short run series. Taking to Twitter, here's what Gaiman had to say;

"It's definitely not dead. I'm grateful to the team at @Starz for the American Gods journey so far.  Fremantle (who make AG) are committed to finishing the story that began in episode 1, and right now, we're all just waiting to see which way forward is best, and who it'll be with."

Echoing Gaiman's comments, a spokesperson for Fremantle confirmed that they were still behind the series.

“Fremantle is committed to completing the epic journey that is American Gods, one of TV’s most inclusive series with the most amazing fans across the globe. With Neil Gaiman and this fantastic cast and crew, we are exploring all options to continue to tell this magnificent story.”

Netflix or Amazon seems like the most likely platforms as Gaiman is currently working on an adaptation of his seminal work, The Sandman, which just so happens to be at Netflix. Meanwhile, Amazon is already in business with Gaiman from Good Omens, and they are also the exclusive home for American Gods outside of the US. Both streamers are keen to work with Gaiman more, so it certainly sounds promising that American Gods will get the ending it deserves.

All three seasons of American Gods are available now on Amazon Prime.
