Paramount’s newly rebooted Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are currently sitting on the top of the US box office with a mighty $65 million opening. President of Paramount’s film group, Adam Goodman has announced a sequel is officially in development with a release date scheduled for June 3, 2016.

"Launching a new take on the Turtles into the feature film world was a daunting task because as fans of them ourselves, we felt a great responsibility to ensure audiences were going to experience everything they loved about the Turtles, while also getting to see them brought to life in a way they had never been seen before. The result exceeded our high expectations and the response to the film is beyond great, making it all the more fun to get started on the continuation of their story.”

Produced by Michael Bay, the new Ninja Turtles movie has been greeted with the usual negative critical response associated with a Michael Bay production but true to form that hasn’t prevented a huge opening weekend. Box office analysts had predicted a launch somewhere in the $45-$50 million mark which makes the $65 million total all the more impressive. Naturally, all eyes will be on how well the movie performs in its second and third week as Bay’s productions tend to have steep drop offs due to front loaded opening weekends. There’s no word yet on director Jonathan Liebesman or stars Megan Fox and Will Arnett suiting up for the fast tracked sequel, we’ll let you know as soon as we hear something.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is out now in the US and arrives in the UK on October 17.
