The follow-up to this year’s smash hit The Lego Movie might have been pushed back to 2018 but it promises to be worth the wait. Phil Lord and Chris Miller who wrote and directed the first film will be back to write the script for the sequel. There’s no word yet if the duo will return to direct as they are balancing a number of active projects.

Warner Bros decide to move their recently announced Lego Batman Movie into the previously earmarked 2017 date for The Lego Movie 2, before that we get the another spin-off in the form of Ninjago in September 2016. Both Phil Lord and Chris Miller will remain involved with the expanded Lego universe as producers of both forthcoming spin-offs, they have yet to rule out directing the sequel but at the very least their unique sense of humour will be all over the script and that remains one of the many things I loved about the movie.

The diverse writer/directors are also the masterminds behind both 21 and 22 Jump Street, the R-rated antics of Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum have proved a huge success at the box office with a combined total of more than $528 million worldwide. Channing Tatum recently cast a shadow of doubt over the possibility of another sequel.

"I feel like that would be a cop-out. College was the obvious next step for us. We had to go there. I don't know what the next step is after college. Do we go and take down Enron? Or the government in D.C.? I feel like it's all redundant.

The big running joke of the second movie is this is just going to be bigger ... than the first time. I don’t know if that joke works three times, so we'll see.”

Tatum and Hill lent their voices to The Lego Movie as Superman and Green Lantern respectively, the fate of 23 Jump Street might be unknown but the future looks bright for The Lego franchise which is nothing short of awesome.

The Lego Movie 2 is due for release in 2018.
