Hot on the heels of the controversial finale of its first series, The Missing will return for a new eight-part run sometime next year according to the BBC.
The hit drama features acclaimed performances from James Nesbitt and Frances O’Connor as the parents of a missing boy. The seven-year search for the truth has left their marriage in ruins and Tony (Nesbitt) continuing his own investigation. Without giving away spoilers for those who have not seen this excellent series, the ending brings the search for Oliver to a close so we can expect a new set of characters to feature in the second series. The final episode set social media ablaze with viewers in their millions taking to Twitter.
Writers Harry and Jack Williams will be returning to pen the new series, the siblings offered no hints as to what the second case might focus on when they spoke to the press.
"We always knew the story of Oliver Hughes would have an ending. But in writing the first series we found there were many themes and issues we didn't have the chance to explore,”
The Missing was shown on the Starz network for its US broadcast, the managing director for Straz (Carmi Zlotnik) also commented on the renewal;
“The response to the show has been fantastic, and we're thrilled to be telling a brand new story which we hope will surprise and intrigue and tell an even bigger tale on an even more ambitious canvas.
The remarkably talented Williams brothers crafted a beautifully complex and heart-wrenching story with The Missing and while the story, character and locations will be different in this new iteration, we anticipate the same captivating long-form storytelling and character development that critics and viewers have responded so well to.”
A brief teaser trailer was shown after the conclusion of the first series, Julien Baptiste (Tchéky Karyo) gives so gruff narration and says; "To lose somebody can destroy a person. But to find them again, when so much has passed, that can be worse.” This gives us some indication that the second series will centre on a missing child who is found after many years, and the story will once again unfold in separate timelines.
