No dear reader that isn’t a typo and the third Taken entry is following the tradition of Se7en, Sre4m and 2 Fast 2 Furious by adding a number to the title of the movie. Questionable spell checking aside, Liam Neeson is back on butt kicking mode as former CIA Agent Bryan Mills who regularly unleashes his specific set of skills on unsuspecting bad guys.
This time, Bryan is stitched up like a kipper for a murder he didn’t commit and is forced to go on the run from the law to clear his name. After being kidnapped twice, it’s a relief that Mills’ daughter Kim (Maggie Grace) won’t be taken for a third time as not only would that make for inherently lazy storytelling but social services would have to step in.
Despite earlier protests from Neeson that he was finished with the franchise, the fact that the combined takings stand at over $600 million worldwide the studio we’re unlikely to give up on a lucrative brand so easily. There’s no word yet on what the rating will be for Taken 3, but as the PG-13 Taken 2 made over $150 million more than its R-rated predecessor I think it goes without say which way the studio will be leaning.
Joining Nesson are franchise regulars Famke Janssen and Maggie Grace with newcomers Dougray Scott and Forest Whitaker. Three new images from the forthcoming sequel have just been released and you can check them out below.
Tak3n arrives in cinemas on January 9, 2015.
