Now that Paramount have tasked a team of writers to cook up Transformers spin-off movies, one of those ideas could turn out be a Cybertron set prequel. Only a couple of weeks ago Paramount hired writer Akiva Goldsman to head up the team of scribes, their mission is to develop sequels and spin-offs to transform the franchise into a multi-film connected universe.

According to Deadline, one of the frontrunner ideas is a prequel set on the Transformers home world of Cybertron. The origins movie would explore the events that started the war between the evil Decepticons and the heroic Autobots. The writing think tank is surprisingly impressive and offers hope for the future, no disrespect to the previous Transformers movies, but they are not exactly known for their fantastic screenplays.. Seeking to change that stigma, Paramount drafted in Art Marcum & Matt Holloway (Iron Man), Zak Penn (Pacific Rim), Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead), Jeff Pinkner (Fringe). After completing an uncredited production draft of Ant-Man, Andrew Barrer & Gabriel Ferrari have also joined the team.

Aside from the first one, Transformers is a franchise I bid farewell to after the creative lows of Revenge of the Fallen. As a kid I amassed a fine collection of the Hasbro toys and my made-up on the spot adventures had more depth than the last couple of sequels. That said, a Michael Bay free (possibly human free) Cybertron movie does sound full of potential. Development of the expanded Transformers universe is in its early stages, before any spin-offs arrive Michael Bay will be back at the helm for the next instalment. Transformers 5 is currently set for a Summer 2017 worldwide release.
