AMC are expanding the world of its hit series The Walking Dead, the network’s general manager and president Charlie Collier has confirmed a spin-off series is now in development.
"Building on the success of the most popular show on television for adults 18-49 is literally a no-brainer.”
The spin-off will be based within the same universe as the original series; this could lead to potential crossover episodes or cast members swapping shows altogether. At this early stage we can only speculate as to what the possibilities are, personally I’m just thankful we’re going to be getting even more high quality zombie action on our TV screens. Charlie Collier also confirmed the involvement of Walking Dead alumni with three of its producers overseeing the spin-off.
“We look forward to working with Robert (Kirkman), Gale (Anne Hurd) and Dave (Alpert) again as we develop an entirely new story and cast of characters. It's a big world and we can't wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse."
The new series won’t be based on any of the existing comic books co-created by Robert Kirkman, a prospect that he finds very appealing;
“After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe. The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing”
The as yet untitled companion series will air sometime in 2015 and is the second of AMC’s popular TV shows to receive a spin-off. Breaking Bad’s lovable (but shady) lawyer Saul Goodman is getting his own series entitled Better Call Saul, set before the events of the multi-award-winng drama this prequel will also potentially bring back a few of the supporting players from the acclaimed series.
The Walking Dead is back on our screens this October when the fourth season debuts.
