A sequel to Disney’s smash hit Wreck-It Ralph is finally moving forward with news that the follow-up will be released on March 9, 2018. Rich Moore (Zootopia) is returning to direct the second instalment and has revealed that this time around Ralph will be causing havoc online.

“From the moment we started working on the first Wreck-It Ralph, we knew there were so many possibilities with these characters. This time, Ralph’s wrecking wreaks havoc on the web, as only he can do. Characters we loved in the first film are back, and we are ecstatic to be working with them — and the actors who voice them — once again.

I think the world of that first film is so big and the characters are very rich and I just think that they have more stories in them. The end of the movie felt like a launching point. It felt like it wouldn’t be straining to tell another story in that world as some films are. To me, I feel like I can definitely see where it would go, and I think the audience kind of felt that way too.”

Even though not strictly speaking based on a video game, Wreck-It Ralph is easily one of the best movies to be inspired by the gaming world (second only to Jason Statham’s Crank), and played heavily on the nostalgia factor. In typical fashion, Disney made an animated movie that appealed to grown-ups every bit as much as the youngsters.

John C. Reilly will be back to voice the affable titular oaf, and early word has it that Mario and Sonic could play a prominent role in the story. Sonic The Hedgehog made a memorable cameo in the first film, but Mario was nowhere to be seen despite an appearance from his arch-nemesis Bowser. Ultimately, the producers couldn’t find a natural way to include Mario in the first movie, and Moore is working on negotiations with Nintendo to get the legendary character in the sequel.
