Following the Instagram teaser last week, the first full trailer for Bryan Singer’s X-Men Days of Future Past has arrived.

Taking the most popular story arch of the comic book series, this seventh movie in the franchise could easily be the biggest and best. Days of Future Past finds a handful of surviving X-Men form a plan to prevent the dark alternate future that has mutants hunted down by robotic killing machines called Sentinels. Putting aside their difference, Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and Magneto (Ian McKellen) locate Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) and transport his consciousness back in time to make the younger versions of Magneto and Professor X (Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy) work together to quash this future threat.

There’s a brief glimpse of all the major players including Ellen Page as Kitty Pride, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Halle Berry sporting a cool new hairdo for Storm and Nicolas Hoult as Beast. There’s a single shot of Peter Dinklage’s character Bolivar Trask, the man behind the Sentinel program but considering how much story they’ve packed into this two-minute trailer we’ll see much more of him in future promos.

This first trailer does an excellent job of getting the barebones of the complex time-travel plot across in an epic and exciting way. I don’t think I’ve ever been this geared up for an X-Men movie before, First Class was very enjoyable but Bryan Singer’s return to the franchise that he ushered in looks like just the shot in the arm it needed.

X-Men Days of Future Past is released May 26 2014.
