Star Trek and American Horror Story actor Zachary Quinto is joining the cast of Hannibal season 3, according to TVLine Quinto will guest star in at least one episode of the forthcoming season.
His exact character details are still unknown, but TVLine have confirmed that Quinto will feature as a patient of Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier (Gillian Anderson). Without spoiling the series too much for those who have they to sample its dark delights, when we first met Du Maurier she had given up her practice owing to an unfortunate incident with a patient. We already know that things didn’t end well for said patient as Hannibal stepped in to help, this almost certainly means that Quinto’s scenes will be in the form of a flashback.
Fans of the series were left stunned earlier this year when NBC announced it was delaying the launch of the third season until the summer. Technically speaking no start date had been given prior to the announcement, but as previous seasons were aired earlier in the year we had expected season three to follow the same pattern.
The new season Hannibal will see the series skip forward in time from the eighth episode onwards, showrunner Bryan Fuller also confirmed that events will start catching up with the published books of Thomas Harris. Richard Armitage (The Hobbit) was recently cast as The Tooth Fairy Killer aka Francis Dolarhyde; this nightmarish serial killer was previously portrayed by Ralph Fiennes in Red Dragon and Tom Noonan in Manhunter. Michael Pitt won’t be returning as the disfigured Mason Verger, owing to a scheduling conflict Pitt had to be replaced by Joe Anderson.
The second season finale left things on a bit of a cliffhanger; more than one main character was in dire need of medical attention and Hannibal was on the lamb. When I say Lamb I mean he’s gone on the run, that said I’m sure Hannibal is partial to a leg of lamb on a Sunday.
Hannibal returns to NBC this summer.
